What Is An Epidermoid Cyst?
An epidermoid cyst is a benign lump that forms when skin cells are trapped beneath the surface, creating a sac filled with keratin. These cysts are usually slow-growing, round, and painless, commonly found on the face, neck, or trunk. They may become swollen, red, and tender if infected, sometimes draining pus. While most epidermoid cysts don’t require treatment, they can cause discomfort or cosmetic concerns, especially if infected or inflamed.
The most common treatment for an epidermoid cyst is surgical removal, where the entire cyst and its lining are excised to prevent recurrence. Dr Wu can usually perform this procedure under local anesthesia in her rooms after assessment, sometimes on the same day as the consultation. In cases of infection, antibiotics may be prescribed before or after surgery. Drainage can provide temporary relief, but it doesn’t remove the cyst’s sac, so it may refill over time. For best results, it's recommended to avoid squeezing the cyst, as this can lead to further infection or scarring.
