What Are Breast Cysts?
Breast cysts are fluid-filled sacs that form in the breast tissue and are most common in women between the ages of 35 and 50. They often fluctuate in size with hormonal changes, especially before menstruation, and can feel soft or firm. While they are typically benign, cysts can cause discomfort, pain, or tenderness, especially if they grow larger or become infected.

Cysts are usually diagnosed with ultrasound or mammography, where they appear as smooth, round masses filled with fluid. If a cyst is large or painful, it can be drained (aspirated) to relieve symptoms. Simple cysts generally don’t require further treatment, but if a cyst reoccurs or shows unusual features, additional tests may be needed.

Though breast cysts do not increase the risk of breast cancer, complex cysts with irregularities may warrant closer monitoring. Most cysts are harmless and require only periodic follow-up, but women should monitor for any changes and consult their doctor if concerns arise.
