What is Oncoplastic Breast Surgery?

Oncoplastic breast surgery is an advanced approach to treating breast cancer that combines tumor removal (oncologic surgery) with plastic and reconstructive techniques in a single procedure. Instead of focusing solely on removing the cancer, this method also aims to preserve or restore the natural shape, symmetry, and appearance of the breast. Techniques can include reshaping the remaining breast tissue, utilizing tissue outside of the breast as replacement or reducing the overall size of the breast. The goal is to achieve effective cancer control while minimizing the physical changes that often result from traditional procedures. Sometimes surgery can be performed on the other breast to "symmetrize" them.

One of the key advantages of oncoplastic surgery is that it allows surgeons to remove larger tumors or wider margins of tissue without significantly compromising cosmetic outcomes. In standard breast-conserving surgery without reconstruction, removing more tissue can lead to visible deformities such as indentations, asymmetry, or distortion of the breast. Oncoplastic techniques address this by redistributing or replacing tissue during the same operation, which can reduce the likelihood of needing additional corrective surgeries later. This approach can also improve surgical precision, as surgeons are less restricted by concerns about leaving enough tissue behind purely for appearance.

Compared to breast surgery without reconstruction, oncoplastic surgery often leads to better psychological and quality-of-life outcomes. Many patients report higher satisfaction with their body image and feel more confident after treatment, as the breast maintains a more natural look. It can also reduce the emotional impact associated with visible reminders of cancer surgery. Additionally, combining cancer removal and reconstruction into one procedure can mean fewer operations, shorter overall recovery time, and potentially lower healthcare costs. Overall, oncoplastic breast surgery represents a more holistic approach, addressing both the medical and aesthetic needs of patients.
